Echoes of the Stone: Mineral Pigment Paintings

"Echoes of the Stone: Mineral Pigment Paintings," organised by the Society of Mineral Pigment Art of Hong Kong with Wyndham Social as Venue Partner, will showcase the latest works by twenty members of the society. The exhibition demonstrates how they have combined traditional mineral pigment techniques with their personal artistic styles following their study tour of the Dunhuang murals, creating works full of exploration and originality.

Mineral pigment painting, an art form using powdered minerals mixed with glue, traces its history back to China's Tang Dynasty. In June 2024, the Hong Kong Mineral Pigment Art Society organised a nine-day study trip to Dunhuang to explore the roots of mineral pigment art and integrate it with contemporary art. Members visited ancient pigment mining sites to personally collect the pigments used in Dunhuang murals and understand the raw materials. They also studied traditional copying techniques of Dunhuang murals, including restorative copying, organisational copying, and current-state copying, as well as the detailed "ink dotting" technique, deeply experiencing the mineral pigment painting process. Chung Tai Fu, president of the Society of Mineral Pigment Art of Hong Kong, stated that members traveled to the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang to study Tang Dynasty mural copying techniques, aiming to explore the roots of mineral pigment art and integrate it with contemporary art.
